A Formula 1 engineer, and a teacher before that.

My name is Matteo Tomei. I design transmissions and analyse vehicle dynamics: I did it for four Formula 1 seasons and I do it now at Dana, in Turin. Before all that I taught physics and maths for four years, to high-school students and first-year undergraduates. The subjects I explain are not a memory from university — they are what I use on a Monday morning.

    Design of dual-clutch transmissions, both mechanical and hybrid, with layouts that exist nowhere else.

    What I use here: moments, torque and gear ratios — year-ten mechanics, inside a gearbox.

    Gearbox and Systems Engineer

    Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, Formula 1 · Faenza

    Bench validation of every car system — hydraulics, brakes, gearbox, clutch, steering — and correlation between measured data and physical models. Trackside as a reliability engineer from 2022 to 2024.

    • New component testing methods
    • Software for bench data management and statistical analysis
    • Reliability monitoring and component allocation at races

    What I use here: statistics and experimental data analysis — uncertainty, distributions, acceptance criteria. The very chapter that feels most pointless at school.

    Simulation work on vertical dynamics optimisation, race weekend preparation and analysis, 7-post rig activity. In the operations room as a suspension specialist through the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

    • Analysis methodologies for kerb riding
    • Definition of ride inputs for the simulator
    • Software with an interface to manage simulations and analysis

    What I use here: kinematics and rigid-body dynamics, on a real suspension that really moves.

    Performance analysis, setup work and competitor monitoring across the 2020 DTM season race weekends, from the operations room and trackside.

    What I use here: frequency response and the damped oscillator — the year-twelve oscillations chapter, applied to a racing car.
